Bass Play Workmate (2015)

Combining inspirations from the one-off and complex creation of French potter Bernard Palissy’s 16th century oval platter with today’s multi-produced, flat-packed, consumerist furniture, Owen merges the various meanings of what the word ‘consumerist’ conjures through time and context, decoration and functionality. Owen’s Bass Play Workmate features three ceramic objects - their overtly flamboyant quality used by the artist to convey visual seduction, a nod to Palissy’s purely decorative creations. Simultaneously, they also function as objects for everyday use. These ceramics are positioned on the surfaces of an ergonomic frame, its shape referencing the furniture of the Ikea generation. From the decorative to the practical, Bass Play Workmate is a piece that sits between the ornamental and the functional; the surreal and the everyday.
